Getting your home ready

The day before

• Replace dead bulbs, and match bulb colors in the same room
• Plan for pets to be out of the house or crated away from the shoot
• Move cars out of the driveway and off the street out front
• Make sure every room, closet and the garage can be opened

Outside

• Mow, rake and trim anything overgrown
• Put trash and recycling bins out of sight
• Put away hoses, tools, toys and pool gear
• Take covers off the grill and patio furniture, open umbrellas
• Remove security signs and extra yard decor

Kitchen

• Clear the counters. Only one or two decorative pieces stay
• Clear the fridge front: magnets, papers, calendars
• Put away dish soap, sponges, towels and trash cans
• Empty the sink and the drying rack
• Pick up floor mats

Living spaces

• Put away family photos, mail, remotes and chargers
• Pick up toys, pet beds, shoes and bags
• Fluff pillows, fold throws, straighten curtains
• Clear the dining table, or leave one simple centerpiece

Bedrooms

• Make the beds, smooth and crisp
• Clear nightstands: books, chargers, glasses
• Put away clothes and shoes, and close the closets

Bathrooms

• Put away every toiletry: shampoo, razors, toothbrushes
• Remove bath mats, the scale, trash cans and tissue boxes
• Take down shower caddies, clean mirrors and glass
• Put the toilet seat down

Right before I arrive

• Turn on every light in the house
• Open blinds and curtains
• Turn off ceiling fans and TVs

A standard home takes two to four hours. It helps if people stay out of the room I'm working in.
